Early one morning I drew a cat while I thought about things.
Another morning I drew another cat and thought some more.
I've been thinking about what's within my control, what I can do, what's within my nature, what's outside my control, how I can respond to difficult times in ways that might help the common good. Of course, these thoughts can easily get out of perspective. When that happens I dial it back and try to get practical.
I keep coming back to the facts that I can make art and I can love people. Love matters even more in times when messages of hate abound. Love is itself radical. Art is how we remember our humanity - art often dramatizes our ability to be compassionate, empathetic, loving - and our humanity is the very thing mean people try to squash and deny.
So, I bought some paper plates. Over 200 of them. I use them as palettes when I paint. I'll be doing a lot of loving via art making! (My blog post here has more details and encouragement for my fellow artists.)
And I've gotten a bigger bottle of my blue ink - going to be lots more love this way too!!
Besides drawing in my sketchbook with blue ink - I'm doing some blue ink drawings for my Zazzle shop … I'm making some cups like this one…
...and some throw pillows like this one.
And I want to make more cards too.
They're practical things - and loving too.
During difficult times drawing and painting sometimes feels like spitting into a stiff wind. In those times I'm profoundly grateful for your kind comments, when you tell me that my art gave you a needed smile. Your comments help me remember this sketchbook page I did some time ago.
