I’ve illustrated a new, just out, cookbook titled “Kim Cooks Sue Draws”. I created the cookbook illustrations in much the same ways as I work in my sketchbook. Watercolor pencils, fountain pens and gouache all were used in my usual layered ways. The difference was that I used an 8 x 10 watercolor paper pad for the illustrations rather than a bound sketchbook. I was also a bit neater, more careful than when I'm casually playing in my sketchbook. Here's a look at one of the illustrations on my work table.
This cookbook project has been in progress over the last several months. I’m only just now mentioning it in this email newsletter because Chef Kim Mahan, whose recipes I illustrated, is pleased and so the cookbook has been released! Here is the happy chef, in her culinary school kitchen, proudly holding up the new cookbook!
Chef Kim Mahan besides having had a culinary education also has a background of training in fine art, psychology and education. She knows my whacky sense of humor and asked me to illustrate her cookbook because “People learn new skills best when they're having fun!”
So I indulged in my whackiest whimsy and responded to Chef Kim's recipes and the food ideas therein using my usual art supplies on the watercolor pad I mentioned earlier. When all of the hand made pages were finished I scanned each page to digitize them. I did not do any digital manipulation of the artwork, this book is the same size as the original artwork and is as faithful to the original art as is possible. In addition to being a useful cookbook it is also a coffee table style art book.
The illustrated cookbook, Kim Cooks Sue Draws, is available as a printed book to be picked up in person at the chef's culinary school Class Cooking http://www.class-cooking.com/
Kim Cooks Sue Draws is also available to be shipped to you or downloaded as a pdf file from this link https://www.blurb.com/b/11301105-kim-cooks-sue-draws
So you can see how my original artwork, shown above on my work table, looks in print here's a photo of the page in the printed cookbook.
Here's what the same page looks like in the PDF ebook.
More pages from Kim Cooks Sue Draws and more details about the book can be seen here https://sueclancy.com/portfolio/kim-cooks-sue-draws/
Whenever I complete projects like this I feel it's a direct outcome or benefit of my daily sketchbook practice. Perhaps since you get this email newsletter and see so many of my sketchbook pages you see this too?
Anyway, I hope Kim Cooks Sue Draws will be enjoyed for the good recipes, the cooking skills and the whimsical artwork. 🤞
Have a fun weekend and bravo in advance if you try a new recipe or drawing technique!!
I see it! Nice work, Sue! I love cookbooks with illustrations rather than perfect glossy photos.
You're welcome!
