This was such a delightful post, Sue!! I have a big, goofy grin plastered all OVER my face. Congratulations on the exhibits of your art books. Before you explained your intent with the six books, I saw each as telling the story of one cup of coffee. Each cup of coffee is a little bit different from another, and each cup has its own unique value.
Yes!!! Now I have a big goofy grin because you also saw that each book was indeed telling the story of 6 cups of coffee! Thank you for that!! Every story is about what happens within moments of time. It's up to us folks telling the stories to choose the minutes we tell about. Do you remember the advice to writers "make your characters want something even if only a glass of water"? That too was in my mind as I told my coffee stories... time is critical to the "wanting" it seems as well as to the telling... 🤔
If we could meet in real life for coffee I'd ask your opinions about time use in novels and poetry and specifically the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jorge Luis Borges and how they seem, to me anyway, to use time as a character/attribute...
Thank you for the big smiles!!!! And thanks for the congrats!
Yes, I do remember "make your characters want something even if only a glass of water." It's not so easy to do on a scene-by-scene basis, but, as you say, it's important, and I'm getting better at it. You know, I don't believe I will ever think about a cup of coffee the same way again after today!
I finally had time to read your whole post. I think my urge to make sketchbooks is part of my wanting to make unique artist books. something to ponder...I love the description of the process of your coffee filter books.
Yes!!!! Sketchbooks really are unique artist books!!! The main difference in my opinion between sketchbooks and "artist books" is that the artist books tend to be dressed up to go out on the town (focused on a theme etc) whereas sketchbooks are at home in their sweatpants and comfy t-shirts eating ice-cream straight from the tub...
And I'm glad you liked my description! Thank you!!!! 💚💙💚💙💚💙📚📚📚📚
excellent analogy. One of my painting professors used to refer to exhibitions like prom night for your paintings: all dressed up for their night on the town.
I definitely would like to make some single theme artist books, with an eye towards getting into some of those collections.
ooo! thank you! TBF, I think I’ve been heading here for a long time, so you are not so much enabling but jollying me on along a path I was already walking on.
Good!!!!! BTW I've blurred the lines and have done entire sketchbooks on themes making them unique artist books. So that's an option too! Such sketchbooks are dressed up to go out but perhaps more “fast casual” dining levels of dress. Here's an example of a reproduction book I made of my themed real-life kitchen sketchbook. https://www.blurb.com/b/10863384-favorites-so-far
This is so interesting and creative! Both the coffee filter books AND the edge art. I love it when someone expands what art can be. I hope to go to BIMA this summer. Will your book be on display there?
Yes!! If you go to BIMA 3 or 4 of my books are in their permanent artist book collection- I don't remember (without looking through my records) if the coffee book is one of them or not. Just ask the museum staff about the books by Sue Clancy that they have. And I hope you'll enjoy my work and the whole museum when you go!!!!!
Thank you for your kind comment about my work! I appreciate you!!! 💙💚💙💚💙💚
I’ve been there several times—I love BIMA! I actually like it better than SAM. It’s where I learned about the Urban Sketch group! Ok, I will definitely ask. I’ll be all smug, like, yeah, I know her…she’s my friend. 😎
Oh wow what a cool idea. I'm really inspired! (Also you have given me a good excuse to get over to Eryngium Papeterie, which is always a delightful way to spend time...and money.)
Oh good!!!! Glad you're inspired!! Yes, Eryngium is such a delightful place!! They had some delectable new nibs and inks when I was there recently... Have fun!! And thank you for your kindness! 😊💚💙💚

Fair warning it's highly addictive... but, here, let me help you slide into the very deep rabbit hole 😁:
The BIAM museum mentioned in my post is a great resource

Fast casual sketchbooks! ha ha! I love it. Your hand written recipe book is wonderful. So many ideas, but that’s what keeps me going.
Such wonderful ideas, Sue, as always!
So kind of you!!! Thank you!!!! 💙💚💙💚💙💚
