Here's a look at one of my artist books in my current one-person fine art exhibit at the Caplan Art Designs Gallery. The book is titled “The Pumpkin Patch" and has already been sold and gone home with happy art collectors! I share it here with you for the joy and fun of it.
“The Pumpkin Patch" is a story I made up and wrote after a neighbor and friend assembled in his backyard a pumpkin patch, complete with hay bales and a scarecrow, for his very young granddaughters and their families to visit. My friend and neighbor reminded me of my adopted Dad who did similar things for his children and grandchildren. Another man in my city creates elaborate holiday themed yard events each Fall for the entire community to visit and experience. There are many local orchards and farms where we live in the Pacific Northwest that offer seasonal handpicked produce and handmade beverages like apple cider or baked goodies like apple or pumpkin pies which they offer to the public.
Anyway, I thought about various Fall seasonal community events as I worked on creating my story, writing several drafts by hand, until I had the text finished.
Then I trimmed and folded handmade paper, creating the illustrations and handwriting my text using ink, color pencils and gouache and putting it all between handmade covered board covers. The finished book took me a bit over two weeks to create.
“The Pumpkin Patch” is 3.75 inches tall and 2.75 inches wide when closed. When open fully it is 20 inches long.
In this video I read “The Pumpkin Patch” aloud.
Here it is on YouTube.
Here are still photos so you can look at the illustrations more closely.
I'm delighted that my artist book is with some special collectors now and I'm glad I can share it with you too!
It does our hearts good, I think, during stressful times especially, to remember and celebrate our abilities to create and enjoy life together. And it's true that life isn't ever perfect and sometimes the pumpkins get away but it's all we've got. We're all we've got.

Lovely! As warming as pumpkin soup!
I love your latest little book! Now, the question is, does the size of the pumpkin that got away get bigger every time Grandpa tells the story?? (I'm guessing it does.)
