As I have worked towards my upcoming art exhibit opening Oct 3 at the Caplan Art Designs Gallery I learned that there are now 8 independent bookstores in my town, Vancouver, along with 12 branches of the public library! And this count does not include the 11 or so independent bookstores and all of the many public libraries in the very nearby city of Portland Oregon aka “booktown". This means that no matter where I go, as the crow flies, I am seldom more than 2 miles from a source of books!
This awareness inspired me to create an artist book titled "As The Crow Flies." It's a 14 page handmade artist book that I made using pen and ink on accordion style folded handmade paper. It is 3.5 by 2.5 by .75 inches when closed. When opened it can stretch to 36 inches long. Here's a look at the cover and a bit of the inside…
… here's more of the inside…
… and the end of my book.
Here's a video so you can see all of it.
Since I'm busy getting ready to deliver all of my new art to the Caplan Art Designs Gallery soon I haven't had much time to play in my sketchbook. But I did this drawing of an author doing a book signing. (Yes, I play on the phrase “a little bird told me".)
One of the challenges for me in exhibit preparations is using technology to make videos of my artwork. I manage okay. Mostly. Here's another video look at “As The Crow Flies” in a different orientation.
In the Gallery during my exhibit, “As The Crow Flies" will sit on a pedestal for viewing and being handled. I have some clear book stands that will hold it upright.
People buy artist books to display in homes or offices like a small sculpture. Here you see it on my bookshelves.
Here's a look at it stretched open…
… to it's full 36 inch length.
Yes, there are so many bookstores and libraries in my area that the tourist shops sell a greeting card to that effect! How fun is that?!
Perhaps with that factoid about my geographical area you can see how my book “As The Crow Flies" fits in with my last newsletter about my “Eggheads” and my reasons for creating that 24 piece interactive sculpture. (p.s. for my fellow artists or people curious about how artists solve creative problems here's a blog post about how I solved my dilemma of how to display my Eggheads in the Gallery.)
If you're not familiar with the phrase…
I hope your weekend contains a direct route to the things you find relaxing.

I love artist books. I've been making a few of them and really exploring what else I can do with them. <3 <3
I wish I could buy a copy of your book. It’s beautiful.
