As you were adding the lines to your progressive sketch in your video, I thought "that's kind of what I experience while doing word puzzles with a gel pen. I love the tactile sensation as the pen glides smoothly across the newsprint paper. Besides the mental stimulation of the puzzles themselves, I enjoy the "feeling" of writing with a certain kind of pen on a specific kind of paper. Glossy paper doesn't do it for me. It's got to have some teeth ... small teeth. And the pen shouldn't skip or need to be pressed hard to make its mark. Sometimes even the gel pen does this, but I realize I just have to get a grip and try harder.

Yes!! My morning sketchbook sessions feel a lot like doing word puzzles!!! And, I agree there's no better feeling than the glide of a smooth pen on a pleasantly tactile paper!! My adopted Dad did crosswords using a fountain pen- and I learned what a pleasure a good pen can be!!

That's a very impressive doodle! Just our of curiosity, at what point does a doodle cross the threshold into art?

Thank you! As far as the doodle/art threshold goes that dividing line is thinner than a thread in my opinion. The line for me is whether the finished doodle/drawing can be framed or otherwise displayed in a gallery for viewing by the public. Whenever I make an artist book I do the same kinds of drawings that you see here but the key difference is that the artist book can be displayed and seen in its entirety under a glass case on a pedestal for example. Also whenever my signature goes on it it's "art" - because I'm the one deciding this is art or it's a doodle. Galleries tell us artists "if you know you're going to die then quick sign everything in your studio". 🤣

Thank you very much for opening the door to artist world so I could have a peek inside. The doodle looked like art to me, which is why I asked the question. (I love the gallery quote!)

I'm so very glad to share with you!!! Sometimes, often even, what I do in my sketchbook feels like art to me too. When that happens I get materials that would allow me to frame or display as artwork and I will recreate whatever I did in my sketchbook. Like I did recently for my 3d box "Independent As A Hog On Ice" - I used my sketchbook drawing as inspiration for my 3d box sculpture. You could say my sketchbook is a "first draft". You could also say it's a catalog that I can shop when I want to make fine art.

And I love the Gallery quote too!!!

Now that I think more about it, your sketchbook sounds similar to freewriting to brainstorm ideas for stories and poems.

The doodlebug-in-progress fountain pen project is utterly fabulous, Sue - how wonderful! I have that same Zentangle book - I was given it soon after I'd started doodling in my notebook, before I'd ever Zentangled - I still love making repeated shapes and patterns of my own making (I love spirals and flowerish shapes most of all) but might one day switch some Zen back on. These days - once I get back to it, which will be SOON - my doodlinspiration is likely to be more Clancy than Zentangle! 😊

Lol!!! Your comment is a delightful one!! Thank you!!! I don't follow the zentangles concept strictly (as you can tell) but it's a fun starting place. I really look forward to your doodle inspirations and whatever you do next!!! Your last newsletter about shopping was wonderful - it made me feel we're soul sisters!! 💚😘 Just keep going and being yourself!! 💚
