This was a great reminder! When I was first getting sober, in ‘95, my first sponsor gave me a journal and told me to write in it every night before sleep. “Write a list of at least 5 things you were grateful for today.”
Holey-moley! Some of those nights it was hard to come up with even 2 let alone 5! So I’d look around my bedroom and write down; “Bed, followed by, pillow. “ that was as good as it got on some nights. But of course the further away from a drink I got, the more I found to be grateful for. After 5 years, I was able to be grateful for the very first brand new car I ever had. I was so grateful I even got a vanity tag for it that read, “GRATUDE”.
Time to get back to writing out more gratitude lists. Maybe I’ll even fill them with cartoon animals too. 🫶🏻
Bravo to you!!!! Way to go!!!! Yes, it's so true what you say and keeping a gratitude list daily us such a good mental health technique! I love illustrating my lists with cartoon animals or even drawings of the objects on my gratitude lists (I have a lot of drawings of my coffee cup 🤣) because it helps me focus and get even more good out of making my gratitude list. Happy illustrated gratitude list making to you!!! And *thank you* for your kind comment!!! 💙💙💙💙
Thank you so much!!! I appreciate hearing that!! I confess that when I momentarily feel like my art is "frivolous" in times like these I remind myself that actually I'm giving friends like you a bit of emotional support so that you can keep doing the necessary work you've been doing... we need each other!! Hugs!! 💙💙💙💙
I admit, I am more inclined to make “to-do” lists than gratitude or this is a good thing lists. I also might put things on them I’ve already done so I can cross off things right away. :-D
My comfort lists are often reminders of what I am thankful for without any particular order. In my middle 70's I am still thankful for the parents who raised me with a gentle hand. Both were honest people, who loved nature and were quietly supportive of me and my siblings. Rarely mad or angry. Often full of humor and encouragement. Both have been gone now for many years but, still give their age old reminders of things like - start each day anew, sleep on it before making a decision, your smile brightens my day!
And Sue, your art and thoughts and good habits certainly brighten my days! :-)
Your comment is beautiful!! Thank you for what you wrote!! And I'm delighted and honored to give you some brightness!! You've certainly brightened my day!!!
Thank you for this 😊 The words, the cool book, the lovely painting... I've cut down a lot on social media but I'm sticking you 🤗 All the best to you and all your friends, furry and otherwise lol 💙😊💙
Thank you so much for sticking with me! I've cut down on social media too - and people like you are exactly why I still share my drawings and writing online. I want to support my friends like you!! Hugs 💙💙💙
The kinds of things I have in my little book are something that occurred that day that gave me a deep-inside feeling of joy (as I defined the word in this post). You can see an example of one of the pages here https://sueclancy.substack.com/p/play-time-records
It's a fun practice- noticing every day something that struck a deep chord.
Looove this! Every bit! I'm heading to bed, but can't wait to dive into the lists tomorrow. Also appreciate your example of not turning on anything but the coffee pot first thing. I am going to rethink my mornings! Thank you for this yummy food for thought! 😎☕️🥐🍓🫐
Loved this, with the pictures and all!
