Your prep work--reading about a topic you’re drawing--is such a fascinating idea, I may do it in reverse. An artist I am not, but it seems like it would get the creativity flowing.

Yes!!!!! I do it in reverse too!! It's fun to scratch one's curiosity-itch which makes it itch more, so ya scratch it via whatever mark-making you do, which makes the curiosity-itch more itchy... or makes another curiosity-itch show itself... and so it goes!!! This is one area of life where Grandma's admonition "dont scratch that bite" does *not* apply!!! 🤣😘💚💚 Have fun!!!

Trees are so hard to paint! What a wonderful way to develop the skills. You’d build a bond with each tree and capturing its moods in each season would be such fun. I love the results. Thanks so much for sharing them with us. I hope your in-house session goes wonderfully. 🤗🤗😘🌲🌳🌴🌵🌿🍃🍂🍁

Thank you!! Yes, trees are a challenge! And as you say it is a fun way yo approach a challenge!! I've done this a number of times over the years: dogs were a challenge to draw so I selected some 5 or so breeds and did 25 portraits of each dog breed. Did the same with cats... and several other subjects. And thanks for your well wishes...💚🤞

About a week ago I was talking with a friend up on the Washington-Oregon border and in the course of “what are you reading now and what do you recommend?” Part of our conversation, she recommended “The Overstory” to me. I just saw the title on your book list!

Sending her crow and tree cups 🥰

Sue, these are wonderful, thank you. I am reminded of my second poem some weeks ago, which was inspired by a beautiful tree in my neighborhood. Somehow I hadn't noticed it before then. These paintings are rich and heartwarming. Thank you for sharing them.

Oh this is so very delightful! I love that you read a variety of books on the same thing you're drawing. I love to do that type of thing as well, going deep into different perspectives on a topic including material that might only be slightly related.

Expand full comment

Yes!!! It's such a fun way to play with a topic!!! It's like board-game-night but more....what's the word I'm looking for here?... 'scholarly' isn't it because this feels waaay more fun! Anyway however its described I like deep-diving into topics and living with them for a while with variations! Glad to hear I'm not the only one who does this!! Thank you!!! 💚💚💚

Living with them for awhile - yes exactly this ! I have found myself get curious about such random topics over the years. And I just go with it. Because but makes life so much more fun.
