I love your sketches and the writing next to them. I’m so I inspired by them. What is that cake? It looks delicious.

Thank you so much!!! I'm delighted that they inspire you!!! The cake you see is actually a slice of cinnamon bread toasted. It's very like a cinnamon roll but in a loaf form which can be sliced and used as toast.

The color cards are a great example of how to shift perception and expectation! Maybe I need an art class 🎨

Yes, the color class was great!! Also good about color shifts and perception is the book Nature's Palette a color reference for the natural world by Patrick Baty ... a fascinating look at the same colors in many different ways... anyway here's a link with more info. https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/natures-palette-a-color-reference-system-from-the-natural-world_patrick-baty/27141247/item/44645744/?srsltid=AfmBOopVMV1qzAeUTB9p1shgcVqcvZlY3Yt8B_d1mrNPrKKYlw9_5kGFUZM#idiq=44645744&edition=58136601

I love the names of paint colors. Alizarin crimson, cerilean blue, gamboge, etc. Poetry as well as pigment.

I loved your discussion of "true colors." There is so much about visual forms of expression that I don't know! I look forward to more tree studies . . .

Thank you!!! I'm especially puzzled about how to draw birch trees... hope I can find a book re. 🤞

Do you have birches in your area of the country? Our white birches grow individually and also in a tight clump.

Sue Clancy's avatar

Yes, lots of birches here - in clumps like you say and in pairs or individuals. There's a pair across the street from us that I hope to draw....

I wish I could’ve seen the board with all of the colored cards! I love the way you think about color. It inspires me to go deeper in thinking about the way I’m working.

I wish you could have seen my professor's board with all of the cards too! It made a huge impression on me. Since then I approach thinking about color when I make art as like thinking about the quality of the ingredients when I cook. That color class really rocked my world. Glad to hear my newsletter inspires you! You do good work!! Keep it up!! We're in this creative life together!
