I love how it smells too!!! Beautiful drawings... so whimsical! It’s like a meditation.. sketching and writing your thoughts...or are you pondering things first and then draw? Very creative...how talented you are!

Sue Clancy's avatar

Thank you so much!! I am pondering first then drawing. Often it goes like this: one morning I write the phrase as my sketchbook exercise then I think on what I wrote off and on throughout the day and the following morning I'll do the drawing. Sometimes I'll write the phrase I'm thinking about on a scrap piece of paper and when I've gotten it settled then I'll write neatly in my sketchbook.

The ideas for my phrases usually come from current events, stuff from my life (conversations, happenings, memories etc) and some amalgamation of my thoughts in response to whatever I'm reading. Often it's all of the above stirred together. In the evenings before bed I read for about an hour and write in my journal approx 50 or so words about what I did that day, what I saw or noticed and a short thought stimulated by the day. Often this short thought percolates overnight and is related to the thing I write in the morning sketchbook. Does this answer your question??

Expand full comment
Joan Stommen's avatar

Absolutely...I’m the same way, percolating is the word! Just not artistically gifted as you. But you inspire me to write more at bedtime as well as morning musings! Thank you!

That blue ink is STUNNING! And are the beautiful words beside the fabulous drawings your words or quotes or a mix of both?

Expand full comment
Sue Clancy's avatar

Thank you!!! I really like the blue ink too!! And the words beside the drawings are my own. They're whatever is on my mind that morning. Often a topic arises in my mind due to current events and I try to reframe my thoughts in a way that helps me start a day more positively.

"All of my work is my effort to keep hope alive, to keep my own spirits up and also, hopefully, the spirits of my friends." Yes! Me, too! But I have never been able to get any of my pets to sit sweetly and let me draw! My late, great, well-named cat, Loki, used to sit on my sketchbooks, and my keyboard. And she was equally happy spilling my coffee or my inks...

I've had cats like that too!! One cat was named "Tipper" because she'd tip stuff over with her tail in a nanosecond! 💚💚💚🐈

I write this while Dobbins, my red WHD dozes on my lap, his legs dangling onto the couch and his nose buried in my armpit. I can't wait to indulge in your Indulgence pasta which seems so timely! This week in Ohio, the people spoke loudly and Women's Health Rights were saved. The weeks leading up to the election were hectic , and , at times harrowing. A cupful of Indulgence sounds just about perfect!

Thanks for your voice, your words, your drawings in these confusing times!

Oh!! Hugs and love to Dobbins!!! He sounds adorable!!! And thank you for hearing me I too am so grateful and relieved about Women's Health Rights in Ohio...and yes, it's been a slog lately. It's also likely to continue to be difficult because just like abusers everywhere the Republicans don't view as legitimate the voices that aren't their own and they aren't taking "no!" from us as a legitimate answer. The Republicans have been trying to destroy government and democracy and install a theocracy since the 1980's and they will keep trying via different tactics.

So I feel driven to give appreciation, comfort and indulgences those of us who care about democracy and human rights- let's keep our spirits going together!! And I hope you'll enjoy the pasta when you have it and remember you are appreciated!! 💚💚💚
