I don't know that I have any hobbies. Maybe driving around with my husband looking for inspiration photos to take would be considered a hobby. We do have fun!

Yes!!! That definitely counts as a hobby!! It could be filed under the "amateur photography" hobby category!! Also from my observation of your various posts I'd say that you and I share a book reading hobby ... and a poetry writing hobby. I count as a "hobby" anything done because it's fun and it feeds your soul.

That's a good way to look at it. The word "hobby" has some negative connotations for writers (i.e., your writing is a hobby, not a serious vocation).

That's also true of fine artists too. Our creative work is often dismissed as a non serious "hobby" simply because it isn't laser focused on monetary gain which can make a fun activity un-fun. Conversely people who, for example make quilts as a fun hobby, if they're good are told they need to offer their work for sale which can take the fun out... Anyway, for me I think of it all differently: there's what you do that feeds your soul and sometimes that may make money. Sometimes not. But that's beside the point. The point for me is to regularly do an activity that is fun and feels satisfying in the attempt. Too often we forget the fun.

For me, writing is the ecstasy; marketing is the agony. I'm trying to inject at least a modicum of fun into my marketing attempts.

Oh I hear that!!! I feel the same way!!! The idea of "marketing " makes me 🤮 but if I can think of it as "sharing with friends" then 🤗. Occasionally I hold my nose and read about how to do "marketing" just to have an awareness of what's what...and then I just do whatever is fun and don't worry about doing it by the "marketing" biz rules. I literally have a sign in my studio that says Focus On The FUN!

I try to take the attitude of "sharing with friends." Most of the "how to do marketing" does not apply to literary fiction, which seems to have become the red-headed stepchild of the publishing industry--so I might as well focus on the fun!

Loved two wolfs story. I have lots of hobbies. Reading, writing, sketching, painting, craft, Rick painting, collage making, lettering, embroidery and list keeps on growing. I regards to marketing, I now consider it as building in public and teaching. I am beginning to think if I keep on doing both of these things, people will keep reading. Would love to know your thoughts.

I agree with you! That really is another good way to view the topic of marketing as "building and teaching in public"! It's been true in my past experiences that when I keep sharing people keep reading- it becomes a conversation that way. This "marketing" approach may be slower than other methods and less flashy but it feels better to me, more true to my values. I think of creativity as a service we we share with each other and life itself. It's a way of caring about the world rather than a product or a way to get famous or rich... creativity is bigger than any one person.
